⚔️ Taller 1:
TITLE: Distance as a provocation with Manciolino’s “spada da filo”.
DISCIPLINE: Sidesword.
DESCRIPTION: This workshop will cover the plays in Antonio Manciolino’s “Spada da filo” (1531), which all start with ‘stringere’ – slowly moving towards the opponent to close the distance. This puts pressure on the opponent with the intention of provoking them into attacking first. Following Bolognese fencing theory, the opponent’s attack gives us an opening to perform our own counter and take the upper hand. Manciolino’s plays provide us with counters to a variety of different attacks we can expect from our opponent, offering a usable framework and a good basic toolset that can be applied in freeplay.

After attending this workshop, participants will learn the basics of how to make and counter beats from both sides, adding a useful tool to one’s fencing repertoire that can be applied in freeplay settings.

The sources of documentation of him are found mainly in late-medieval and Renaissance treatises, focusing the current investigation of him on Iberian and Italian authors.
To interpret and put into practice the concepts studied in historical treatises, he uses experimental archeology through material culture, in addition to his experience in other martial arts and contact sports, for the execution of biomechanical concepts.
In parallel, he is dedicated to historical dissemination by writing articles in magazines specialized in history and martial arts, as well as holding conferences in museums and other cultural institutions.

⚔️ Taller 1:
TITLE: Symmetry in combat, left-handed and right-handed.
DISCIPLINE: German longsword.
DESCRIPTION: This workshop aims to illustrate the possible complications that a longsword fencer may experience when facing a left-handed opponent and how to adapt to this symmetry during the bout.
Although in two-handed weapons, whether a fencer is right-handed or left-handed is not a determining factor, it is a condition to be taken into account. Although it does not generate situations as complex as when working in double harness, in a right-handed/left-handed confrontation, a fencer with some experience may experience ‘oddities’ when looking for openings, virtual “atajos” and the implementation of close play.
Emphasising these aspects, we will explain the concept of symmetry in combat, illustrating it with examples of common techniques and showing their variations in a right-handed versus left-handed context.

⚔️ Taller 1:
TITLE: No Rules but Skill: Knife and Tomahawk in Combat.
DISCIPLINE: Tomahawk and Bowie knife
DESCRIPTION: In this session, we turn our attention to two weapons rooted in the 18th–19th century American frontier: the tomahawk and the Bowie knife. Though not traditionally part of the European martial canon, these tools reflect many of the same principles we study in historical fencing — control of measure, timing, structure, and adaptability in close combat.
We’ll explore their historical context, discuss sources and reconstruction approaches, and examine how these weapons function both independently and as a paired system. This lesson isn’t just about techniques — it’s about understanding how martial systems evolve in response to environment, culture, and need.
Expect a hands-on, principle-driven exploration that links the past to the present — and maybe helps expand what we mean by “historical European martial arts”.

DESCRIPTION: This lecture explores how diversity enriches martial arts communities — strengthening both skill and spirit. We’ll discuss how inclusive spaces foster creativity, resilience, and broader perspectives, and how welcoming people of different backgrounds, genders, ages, and abilities helps preserve and evolve our arts. By embracing diversity, we don’t just build better martial artists — we build stronger, more vibrant communities.

TITLE: Pedro Monte, closer than ever: Regarding the Spanish translation of his Collectanea.
DESCRIPTION: The translation of Pedro Monte’s Collectanea into Spanish was a historical necessity, as it is an essential text for understanding not only the combat techniques of the Spanish school, but also the technical terms used at the time, which have almost fallen into oblivion. The translation is finally being presented, and there will be a discussion of the process, the challenges encountered, as well as various facts and specific cases that may be of interest to those interested in reconstructing these techniques.

TITLE: The symbolism of the sword throughout history: power and nobility.
DESCRIPTION: A review of what a sword meant in various historical contexts to better understand those who wielded them.
Through various examples, we will review what a sword symbolised throughout European history. Understanding the social and cultural context of the weapon we are studying is essential to understanding its treatises and how it was used, and to what extent authors are conditioned by their means, philosophical currents and society. From pre-Roman societies to Baroque treatises, we will ask ourselves what a sword meant to them.
